Here’s how it is: Earth-that-was got used up. We moved out – terraformed and colonized hundreds of new earths; some, rich and flush with the new technologies; some, not so much. The central planets – them as formed the Alliance – decided all the planets had to join under their rule. Some planets didn’t take so kindly to that. After the War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies; a ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying.
Jack B Badd wasn’t entirely accurate in her prediction that the ship that she, Riddick and Imam would run into could be a "merc ship". Instead, it was an old ship: class Firefly. After some inspection, the name of the ship was found painted on its side. "Serenity".
